ECONOMY
-Greece’s adjusted unemployment rate edged down to 10.6% in May 2024 from downwardly revised 10.7% in the previous month. This was the lowest rate since December 2009, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announced.
-Canada-based credit rating agency Morningstar DBRS has upgraded its estimation for Greek economic growth for 2024 to 1.6% and lowered its GDP prediction to 2.2% for 2025.
-The Overall Producer Price Index (PPI) in Industry (total of domestic and non-domestic market) in May
2024 recorded a decrease of 1.4% compared with May 2023, ELSTAT data showed.
-Most of the EU countries registered a decrease in agricultural output prices in Q1 2024 on an annual basis, Eurostat said. By contrast, prices increased in 5 southern EU countries; they rose most sharply in Greece (+20%), with more modest increases recorded in Malta and Spain (+4%), and Portugal and Cyprus (+1%).
GENERAL
Greeks are the least satisfied in the European Union with the amount of free time that they have, according to a Eurostat report. In 2022, overall satisfaction with the amount of leisure time in the EU averaged 6.8 points, based on a scale from 0 (not satisfied at all) to 10 (fully satisfied). The lowest scores were reported in Greece (5.5), Bulgaria (5.7) and Cyprus (6.2).
TOURISM
-Greece is among the top three destinations in the Mediterranean for cruise vacations, welcoming 7,003,150 passengers and 5,230 cruise ship port calls in 2023, according to the International Association of Cruise Lines (CLIA).
-Santorini Hoteliers Association President Antonis Pagonis told British media Express that overcrowding that occurs in specific places, specific and limited periods of time on the Cycladic island, is due to the lack of infrastructure.
-The number of “unspoiled beaches” in Greece has now reached 238, following the addition of 40 new locations that meet the established criteria, Τo Vima reported.
-From June 17 to 23, Greece was among the 10 European countries with the strongest flight activity, according to data of the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol).
