ECONOMY

-The Greek government is planning to increase Greeceā€™s minimum wage for both public sector and private sector employees between 4.5%-5% as 7 out of 10 private sector employees are low wage earners and can’t make ends meet, Ta Nea reported.

-S&P Global’s seasonally adjusted Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for the Greek manufacturing sector stood at 52.9 points in August, down from 53.2 points in July.

-The monthly inflation rate in Greece stood at 3.1% in August, up from 3.0% in July and exceeding eurozone’s average of 2.2%, Eurostat data showed. Looking at the main components of eurozone’s inflation, services had the highest annual rate in August (4.2%, compared with 4.0% in July).

-The Overall Producer Price Index (PPI) in Industry (total of domestic and non-domestic market) in July
2024 recorded an increase of 0.1% compared with July 2023. The corresponding index in July 2023 had recorded a decrease of 8.6% compared with July 2022, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) data showed.

-The Overall Turnover Index in Retail Trade in June 2024 increased by 7.4%, compared with the corresponding index of June 2023, while compared with the corresponding index of May 2024 decreased by 1.0%, according to ELSTAT.

SHIPPING

-The Greek Merchant Fleet increased by 0.3% in June 2024 compared with June 2023. A decrease of 0.8% was recorded in June 2023 compared with June 2022, ELSTAT said. The gross tonnage of the Greek Merchant Fleet, for vessels of 100 GRT and over, recorded a decrease of 2.7% in June
2024 compared with June 2023. A decrease of 4.0%, was recorded in June 2023 compared with June 2022

-The Union of Cruise Ship Owners and Associated Members (EEKFN) has submitted a series of proposals to the Greek government aimed at enhancing the sectorā€™s safety and ensuring smooth operations, estimating that the country will have welcomed 5,500 cruise ships carrying a total of 6 million tourists by the end of 2024.

-A new Greek law requires coastal shipping vessels in Greece to install easy-access equipment and create designated areas meeting specific standards for people with mobility limitations, the elderly, and pregnant women.
