POLITICS

Greeks living outside of Greece now have the opportunity to vote for the first time. Until 2019, Greeks living abroad have had to return to Greece to exercise their democratic right in national elections. All dates after April are open to hold national elections, Greek media quoted government sources as saying.

STRIKES

-Attica will be left without taxis from 14:00 until 20:00 on Monday (Feb. 13) due to a work stoppage by the Attica Taxi Drivers’ Union (SATA), AMNA reported. Among other demands, the union wants an increase in fares.

-Teachers at Greece’s public schools are planning a nationwide strike on Wednesday (Feb. 15), according to an announcement by OLME.

ECONOMY

-Applications from vulnerable households for having banks subsidize the installments of their loan secured against their first home reached 14,000 in just 10 days. The platform opened on Feb. 1 and according to the banks’ estimates, the beneficiaries amount to 25,000-30,000, Kathimerini reported on Friday (Feb. 10).

-The Greek economy is seen growing by 1.2% this year and by 2.2% in 2024 after a leap of 5.5% in 2022, the European Commission said in its Winter 2023 Economic Forecast, published on Monday (Feb.13).

-In 2022, compared to 2019, instances of electronic fraud increased by 790%, according to figures provided by the Ministry of Citizens’ Protection in response to a parliamentary question, concerning the period 2019-2022.

-Last year, 2,767 new investment immigration permits were issued, representing a 81% rise compared to 2021, when 1,525 were granted, based on statistics from the Ministry of Migration Policy.

CAPITAL MARKET

Equities on Athens Stock Exchange closed higher on Monday with the General Index jumping 2.32%.
