ECONOMY

-Greece plans an early repayment of 8 billion euros of bailout loans to eurozone countries this year, two officials with knowledge of the issue told Reuters.

-The Output Price Index in Agriculture – Livestock (excluding subsidies) increased by 15.7% in April 2024, compared with April 2023, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) said. The increase is on account of: a)
increase 23.7% of the price index in crop output group and mainly on the rate of change of the groups olive oil and fruits and b) increase 1.3% of the price index in animal output group.

-One in four Greeks and two in 10 Europeans were at risk of poverty or social exclusion last year, according to Eurostat. Greece ranked fourth in the EU statistical office’s findings, with 26% of its population at risk of poverty or social exclusion. Romania had the highest percentage at 32%.

BUSINESS

In May, Greek-owned startups raised more than $60 million, taking the sum since the start of the year to over $214 million, data gathered by Marathon Venture Capital reveal.

-For the enterprises of the economy as a whole, obliged to double-entry accounting bookkeeping, the turnover in April 2024 amounted to 32,448,912 thousand euro, recording an increase of 16.1% in
comparison with April 2023, when the respective turnover was 27,937,199 thousand euro, ELSTAT data showed.

-Ten hotels across Greece, spanning from three-star accommodations to luxurious five-star resorts, are slated to hit the auction block from mid-June to October, with initial bids ranging from 2.19 million euros to 13.9 million euros, To Vima reported.

TOURISM

Greece needs to reduce rampant construction and protect water resources and coastal areas if it wants to maintain a healthy tourism industry across its mountainous mainland and beach-lined islands, the Greek Ombudsman said in a report on Thursday. “Our country’s economy relies heavily on tourism which makes the need to manage it in a sustainable way even more urgent,” the report said.
