ECONOMY
Greek feta exports reached 736 million euros in 2023. About 135,000 tons of feta are produced annually in Greece, of which 65% goes to international markets. The main penetration markets are Germany, Britain, Italy, USA, Australia, Naftemporiki reported.
TRANSPORT
-Athens and Thessaloniki have recently added 250 new electric buses to their urban transport networks, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. By the end of 2025, an additional 300 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses will join the existing fleet in Athens.
-Greece’s first helicopter airline Hoper connects Athens to 10 islands (Santorini, Mykonos, Antiparos, Ios, Kea, Sifnos, Spetses, Tinos, Folegandros, and Patmos). The company plans to expand its service to include more islands and mainland locations starting in autumn 2024.
SHIPPING
Posidonia 2024 has already gone down in history as the best-attended in the biennial international shipping event’s 55 years of existence. A total of 32,527 visitors from 130 countries and territories attended the event, marking an increase of 12% compared to Posidonia 2022. Posidonia 2024 was organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy, the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping and the Union of Greek Shipowners and with the support of the Municipality of Piraeus and the Greek Shipping Co-operation Committee.
REAL ESTATE
Within the summer, the National Economy and Finance Ministry is expected to launch a platform for the submission of applications regarding the acquisition of encroached state land, Kathimerini reported.
CULTURE
The Greek Culture Ministry announced that it had added 19 traditions and customs to the National Index of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Patra Carnival, the “Rizitika” folk songs of Western Crete, the winemaking traditions of Rapsani, Limnos, and Metsovo, the pottery tradition of Margarites in Rethymno, Crete, the traditional straw broom making traditions of Faros – Lighthouse for the Blind, and the famous Kalamatianos dance, are this year’s additions.
GENERAL
There is a very high (category 4) fire risk on Friday in ten Greek regions, namely Attica, Central Greece (Viotia, Fthiotida and Fokida), Thessaly ( Magnesia), Peloponnese (Corinth, Argolida) and the region of Crete (Heraklion, Rethymnon, Chania), according to the Fire Risk Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection at the climate crisis and civil protection ministry.
