ECONOMY
-According to the OECD, in the first quarter of 2024 Greece witnessed the sharpest fall among the 38 OECD members in real per capita household income, which fell by 1.9% compared to the final quarter of 2023, despite a 0.9% increase in real per capita GDP.
-The Overall Import Price Index (MPI) in Industry in June 2024 recorded an increase of 4.4%
compared with June 2023, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) said. The twelve-month average Overall Index (from July 2023 to June 2024) decreased by 6.2% in comparison with the corresponding
index of the period from July 2022 to June 2023.
-For the total of enterprises in Accommodation Activities, the turnover in the second quarter 2024 amounted to 2,819,022,548 euro, recording an increase of 10.7% in comparison with the second quarter 2023, ELSTAT data showed. The peninsula of Halkidiki recorded the highest growth in the accommodation sector, with a 20.4% increase. The food services sector reported a 5.8% rise in revenue, totaling at 2,557,431,370 euros, up from 2,417,633,471 euros in Q2 2023.
-In the second quarter of 2024, seasonally adjusted GDP increased by 0.3% in both the euro area and the EU, compared with the previous quarter, according to a flash estimate published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.
GENERAL
According to the Meteo Service of the National Observatory of Athens, based on data from the Copernicus Fast Mapping Service and the European Observatory on Forest Fires (EFFIS) 13 large fires have burned more than 700,000 hectares in Attica region from 2017 until August 13, 2024. Simply put, 37% of the forests have been burned down in the last 8 years.
SHIPPING
Seventeen projects to upgrade ports in more remote areas of Greece will receive a total of 110 million euros under the NSRF 2021-20217 Sectoral Program ‘Transport’, according to the Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy Ministry.
TOURISM
-The new tourism campaign of the Municipality of Heraklion, is entitled “loveHER | 5 Senses | 365 Days”. The campaign cleverly incorporates the first three letters of the Cretan city’s name (HERaklion), a place rich in history, culture and flavors, as the ideal destination offered for enjoyment all year round.
-Eighteen lighthouses throughout Greece will open to the public on Sunday (August 18) in the context of International Lighthouse Day from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00.
