ECONOMY

-Standard & Poor’s on Friday (Oct. 18) maintained Greece’s BBB- rating (investment grade) and positive outlook without releasing an updated report. It is the only major rating agency that currently assigns Greece a positive outlook.

-Greece is last in the EU in terms of investments per GDP percentage (14%), according to a report by the Athens-based Institute for Alternative Policies (ENA).  In comparison, the average figure in the European Union and the Eurozone is 21.8% and 21.6%, respectively.

-Approximately 26.1% of Geeks are struggling to meet housing payments, most recent data from Eurostat showed.

-The number of registered unemployed declined to 776,326 individuals last month, falling by 60,387 individuals or 7.2% relative to September 2023 the Public Employment Service (DYPA) announced.

GENERAL

The Corinth Canal will close for four months on November 4, 2024, to allow for work to continue on protecting its embankments from erosion, its operator has said.

A replica of the Mycenaean warships that “sailed” in the Homeric epics and shaped the maritime tradition of ancient Greece will be put on display for visitors at the Hellenic Maritime Museum on Saturday, October 19, at 11.00 am, AMNA reported.

-Greek authorities announced on Thursday (Oct. 17) that restoration works to save the iconic Shipwreck Beach on Zakynthos island -once voted as the best beach in the world- will begin in 2025.

-Passenger traffic at 24 Greek airports increased by 6.1% in January-September 2024 on an annual basis, the Civil Aviation Authority (CΑA) said. Passenger traffic totaled 9,984,655 in the first nine months of this year, from 9,413,077 in January-September 2023.
